Setting the scene for Thornlands first vibrant community retail hub and dining precinct, Paradise Garden Shopping Village is anchored by more than 1.4 hectares of green space and an architectural character that is a full embrace of the sites’ history and character.

Paradise Garden Shopping Village is a dynamic mix of retail, dining, and community parkland spaces. The neighbourhood centre is designed to service the existing community and to cater to the increasingly densifying Redland’s region.

The site plan is configured as a highly legible precinct; at a macro level, view lines across the precinct are designed to maximise exposure for retail tenants from the street level, and at a micro level, circulation, parkland and view lines are mapped to the journey of multiple customer personas frequenting the centre. The site’s planning approach supports the financial success of the precinct and the multiple agendas of customers: convenience retail, seeking medical services and economy to a day-night experience.

Inspired by the site’s agricultural heritage, a series of barn-like pitched roof forms commence the response for materiality and character. At the heart of the development, the sites’ mass is kept to a human scale, encouraging a respectful co-existence with the newly created parkland. The essence of the community aspect is also supported by integrated landscaping, shared vehicular and pedestrian zones, and pedestrian only courtyards. Locals will remember a portion of the site as the iconic location of the ‘Round Shop’ – a circled-shaped one-stop shop for purchasing groceries, posting a letter or filling up on petrol.

The new retail mix brings these uses to Thornlands with a design cue to the round shop through the village ‘round’; a series of specialty retailers, food and beverage outlets and an adjoining shaded landscape plaza. The neighbourhood centre mix also includes a large format supermarket, shops, food outlets, a family friendly tavern, a hotel and health care centre.
