Bojana Hynes appointed as Principal at Cottee Parker Architects' NZ Studio
This week, we sat down with Bojana to reflect on her journey with Cottee Parker and the experiences that have shaped her path to Principal.
Can you tell us about your time at Cottee Parker and your journey to becoming a Principal.
I’m thrilled to step into the role of Principal after more than four years with Cottee Parker. Being part of the Elevate initiative – an internal leadership program that rethinks how emerging leaders are mentored, recognised and prepared - has been an integral part of that journey.
During my time here, I have worked closely with the Auckland leadership team to strengthen and grow our studio, and I’m excited to continue supporting its growth while contributing to Cottee Parker’s broader leadership team across Australia and New Zealand.
Is mentorship an important part of working at Cottee Parker?
Absolutely. Mentorship is one of the foundations of our profession. It's how we share knowledge, develop confidence and empower the next generation of architects and designers.
I've been fortunate to learn from some incredible mentors throughout my career, so being able to support and develop others is something I'm genuinely passionate about. It's also one of the things I value most about Cottee Parker's culture.
What do you look for in the next generation of architects?
Ingenuity and curiosity are probably the most important qualities. I look for people who are willing to ask questions, challenge ideas and always keep learning. Beyond that, it's a desire to exceed expectations and a willingness to listen - to clients, consultants, trusted delivery partners and colleagues alike. The best architects never stop learning from the people around them.
What is the project you're most proud of?
I'd have to say Westgate Town Centre. I've been involved in the planning and delivery of the precinct for over a decade, working across several projects as the area has grown and evolved. It's incredibly rewarding to see a long-term vision becoming a vibrant destination for the community.
Outside of Architecture & Design, what are your passions?
Family is my focus outside of the office. If time and budgets permit, I also love to travel, to do yoga and enjoy good food and catch up with my friends.
What skill did you have to refine to be a success leader?
Without a doubt, negotiation. Every project brings together different perspectives and priorities, and one of the most important parts of my role is helping align them. It's about listening, building trust and finding solutions that deliver the best outcome for the project. It's not something you're taught at architecture school, but it has become an essential part of my role.
Is there a building that you wish you had designed or an Architect you admire?
I've always been inspired by architecture that quietly becomes part of a city's identity. One of my career ambitions is to design a landmark tower that leaves a lasting contribution to Auckland's skyline and reflects the character of the city.
An Architect I have always admired is Kazuyo Sejima who designs with elegance, restraint and clarity. Since architecture school, her Christian Dior Building in Omotesando has been one of my favourite projects and continues to inspire the way I think about design.
Is there a city whose architecture stands out to you?
That's a tough question! New York captivates me with its energy, history and ever-evolving skyline, while Paris offers an incredible richness of architecture, where every street tells a story. One place that's still on my bucket list is Japan. I'd love to experience its architecture firsthand and explore the work of architects I've admired for years.
What’s next for Cottee Parker? Where would you like to see the practice in 10 years’ time?
At our core, Cottee Parker is about three things: great design, genuine service and a strong commercial focus. We don't just create beautiful buildings - we create places that perform, deliver value and make commercial sense for our clients.
In 10 years, I'd like to see Cottee Parker recognised as one of the most trusted architecture practices across Australia and New Zealand - a practice clients choose because they know we'll deliver outstanding design with commercial intelligence, and a place where talented people want to build their careers.
If we stay true to those values while continuing to create award-winning architecture, I believe the future is incredibly exciting.
